Project Workflow

I came to David’s house and the shooting took place in his own studio. David had his own lighting, camera, teleprompter, and smart prom app (a teleprompter app that automatically scrolls the words on the screen according to the owner’s voice). All these little things made a very positive impression on the client from the first moment.

David had about 100 printed sheets of the script with about 22 lessons on the cybersecurity course we were going to film. When I saw this, I wasn't sure that we would be able to shoot so much material in 1 shooting day. However, I saw a professional who knows well video creation process and his material, and who can shoot from the first take. All this experience helped David and me to film everything in 4.5 hours!

David also wanted to differentiate the design for both basic theory content and live stories from his practice which influenced our filming process. To achieve this and simplify the editing process at the post-production stage we filmed all 22 lectures first. Then, we changed the scenery and put a red and blue police flashlight in the background, and David read criminal cybersecurity stories about how cybersecurity bridges led to millions and billions of losses in corporations, what mistakes led to this, and how companies could avoid this.

As a result of this filming approach, when the scenery and background have been changed, we got more dynamic and interesting lessons at the post-production stage. So working on this online course I didn't just do my job as a videographer or video editor but also learned a lot as a video producer.

The Results

I shot more than 3 hours of raw footage and it took about 1 month of 2 editors' work to create the online course on cybersecurity which everyone can purchase on Udemy

This was one of the most positive experiences in our online course video production as we did both filming and editing parts. Most of our clients approach us when they already filmed materials for a course themselves or with another videographer. But this is more time and budget consuming and here’s why.

When we do both filming and editing parts, we are already familiar with the material and know how it is structured and organised. Depending on the course, it can save at least 6-8 hours at the editing stage. In David’s case, the editing process with the materials filmed by me had turned into a masterpiece much faster and easier for the editors and the client as well.

After filming all the parts of the course, we had a short interview with David where he shared his experience of working with us, what he liked and didn't like, his expectations for the upcoming course on Udemy, and why he chose this platform among others. Enjoy the interview below and if you have any questions about producing your own online course, I will be happy to advise you and help you set up your own studio, set up the process of filming the course so that you can shoot everything yourself, or come to your place and shoot everything together with you. Sometimes this option is much more cost-effective than filming and editing separately with different freelancers or teams.
